Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, Botsa Satyanarayana, held the government accountable for the 16 diarrhoea-related deaths in Vizianagaram district. During a press conference in Visakhapatnam, he demanded immediate ex-gratia payments to the victims’ families and called for the affected villages to be declared “Red Zones” to address the crisis urgently.
Satyanarayana emphasised the need for swift action, urging the government to provide clean drinking water and set up medical camps in the affected villages to prevent further casualties.
He criticized the government for inconsistent data on the death toll, highlighting that the district collector reported one death, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu mentioned eight, and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan reported ten. Satyanarayana accused the government of mismanaging the situation and demanded clarity from the Chief Minister on measures being taken to prevent future outbreaks.
Satyanarayana also questioned the relevance of Pawan Kalyan’s visit to Rushikonda amidst the crisis in Gurlamandal. He alleged that Kalyan’s visit was a diversionary tactic to shift focus from the diarrhoea outbreak.
Satyanarayana suggested that if concerns about construction in Rushikonda exist, they should be addressed through proper investigation, rather than diverting attention from the public health emergency.
